19 May - 4 June
The idea for this opening exhibition came about because I was spoilt for choice: how do I pick an artist to stage Platform Gallery’s first show, when all my friends are artists, all my acquaintances are artists – even half the people I pass walking down Katoomba Street are artists?
There is so much creative talent here in the Blue Mountains that a group show seemed the only logical solution. Luckily for me, there is also a huge diversity in creative genres, so in this show we have textiles, industrial design, jewellery, photography and more. To bring these genres together I set the theme of ‘launch’ – however each artist chose to interpret the word; and appropriate as Platform’s first show.
You will know what I mean when you see the exhibition: for sculptural weaver April Erzetich, launch is a mother giving birth, launching her child into the world; for textile designer Julie Paterson, launch is a retro rocket lamp, covered in her stunning handmade textiles; while the mononymous Sondi is hoping to launch viewers into a firsthand experience of contemporary jewellery, so different from the commercially made jewellery most people are used to.
What binds these works together is the skill with which the artists merge their individual creative practice with Platform’s philosophy of being a launch pad for emerging and mid-career artists, working in genres that are so often excluded from traditional galleries.
With this show we celebrate the beginning of what we hope will be a longstanding, successful experiment in craft, design and culture, bringing something new and exciting to the Blue Mountains, for locals and visitors alike.
